Homemade Bread Crumbs

Okay, I have to apologize for my pathetic post yesterday. I have nothing to complain about and so many things to be thankful for. I am still sick, however not near as pitiful as before.

Our family doesn't like the ends of the loaf of bread. So, I tie up the bag with the ends in it, toss it in the freezer and every once in a while, I blend them all into bread crumbs. In my blender, I can blend them frozen although I do tear the bread in small pieces. It's easy and makes great oven fried chicken. Please visit Shannon at Rocks in my Dryer for more Works for me Wednesday ideas! Have a great day!

  1. GREAT idea - so you don't toast them or anything, you just blend them and you get crumbs . . . it doesn't all gunk together into big balls of ick?

  2. Hi Jen,

No, you don't have to toast them and they stay just like regular bread that has been frozen and then thawed. We eat whole wheat bread, so I've not tried it with white bread. Also, my blender is a Vita-Mix brand. This monster sounds like a jet landing and can saw a piece of wood into sawdust. However I'm guessing the bread would do well in any blender.

  3. Wow! You have a LOT of bread crumbs! A couple weeks ago I posted a recipe for a delicious garlicky Bread Crumb Omelet. It makes a great simple dinner for when you're out of almost everything in the house. If you're interested, it's at my blog, www.queenofthecastlerecipes.com. I think I called it Super Simple Supper. It should be filed under main dishes in Oct.

I should try your idea about using them for fried chicken. Do you have a special recipe you use, or do you just lay the chicken in the bread crumbs and fry away?

  4. Lynn,

Thanks for stopping by! Yes, these bread crumbs freeze really well, so I wait until I have a bunch of bread and do it all at one time.

I am posting the recipe for Oven Fried Chicken on my blog for today's post. I'm not sure why I didn't give it then?!

I'm going to visit your blog and check out your recipes! Thanks.:)
